Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese therapy which has gained widespread recognition amongst western medical establishments and the public. The aim of acupunture is to improve energy flow in the affected area, thus restoring function and improving symptoms. It involves the insertion of needles at certain points.

The approach has been modified in the West to utilise fewer needles which are inserted for a shorter duration. The end result is unaffected by this modification.

At Lotus Healthcare, the acupuncture service is provided by medically qualified doctors who have undergone further training in the art and practice of acupuncture. This allows for a holistic approach to the individual problem and a discussion on the merits of the different approaches. For your safety, the needles are sterile and used only once prior to disposal.

Acupuncture can be beneficial for a number of conditions including painful conditions. Examples include:

  • Musculoskeletal conditions such as back or neck pain, painful joints, frozen shoulder and tennis elbow
  • Migraine
  • Asthma and hay fever
  • Painful periods, premenstrual tension and cyclical breast pain
  • Allergic conditions
  • Painful periods, premenstrual tension and cyclical breast pain
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Bowel conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Impotence
  • Tinnitus

Acupuncture offers the individual a treatment option which does not have the many side effects often associated with conventional medications.

New Research On Benefits of Acupuncture

The mainstream media has reported extensively recent evidence which supports the beneficial effect of acupuncture on painful conditions. The reports suggest that acupuncture stimulates the release of a naturally occurring chemical within the body called adenosine, which is known to have anti-inflammatory properties and also helps to regulate sleep and ease the pain. The study was carried out at the University of Rochester in New York, USA.

This study adds to the growing evidence for the benefits of acupuncture in painful conditions such as a migraine, neck, back, hip, knee and elbow pain and other painful condition such as painful periods.

At Lotus Healthcare, acupuncture is provided by Dr. Mayank R Shah who is a medical acupuncturist and a member of The British Medical Acupuncture Society. Following a detailed assessment, appropriate treatment options including acupuncture are offered.
